Questioning the Debate.

There is a common saying, "Opinions are like assholes, we all have them, and they all stink." Until recently, steered clear of online controversy based on this blunt logic. I simply couldn't find a reason to bother.

About a year ago something changed.

I'm sure the origins of this change have been flying below my radar for a while now, but for me, its arrival was heralded by a single YouTube video. This video, conceptually simple and philosophically flawed, nevertheless sparked an uprising of consciousness in me that I had not experienced in many years.

The Video is here: Atheist

The topic, of course is atheism. Truth vs. truth. Materialism vs. Subjectivism. It is, in fact, nothing short of the dichotomy that defines my mental existence.

I'm sorry to say, there was no ignoring this flame war.

What is tragically amusing about the so called Theist vs. Atheist Debate is that it is not. For all that gets said on the matter, there is very little actual 'debate' taking place. The two sides seem only to succeed in reinforcing their own beliefs, solidifying the party lines, and bringing more like-minded individuals into the fray. This is not "debate", it is a popularity contest.

It is within this premise that I embark on my journey. I do not seek to convince you (or anyone for that matter) that I am correct. This debate is too meaningful to my overall view of the world to simply pick a side and start batting.

Is it possible to frame this debate in a context and philosophical schema that intelligent people on both sides of the argument can agree with? Can they even agree on what they disagree about? Do they even care to try?

Therein lies the foundation of this blog. No, I don't care what you believe. What I care is why you believe it.

Let's forget the popularity contest for a moment... Its time for a good old fashioned philosophical debate.

Anyone else up for it?
